How to Come Back to Yourself After Losing Touch for So Long

Most of us weren’t taught how to stay connected to ourselves. We were taught how to be liked. How to make people comfortable. How to show up for others. What we weren’t taught was… how to listen to us… to our body, to our truth, to what we need in the moment.

At some point, we learned to disconnect. We ignored our feelings, second-guessed our intuition, and told ourselves, “It’s not that big of a deal.” The more we learned to do that, the further we drifted from who we really are.

The good news is you can come back. It won’t be perfect, and it doesn’t need to take years. It starts with small choices, moment to moment, that build trust with yourself again. If you’re ready to start returning to you, here are a few simple but powerful ways to begin:

1. Start telling the truth (even if it’s just to yourself)

Coming back to yourself begins with honesty. Not performance. Not pretending. Not trying to “stay positive.” Just real, grounded truth.

Ask yourself:

  • How am I really feeling today?

  • What feels heavy right now?

  • Where am I pretending I’m okay when I’m not?

Even writing this down in a journal or saying it out loud in the mirror counts. Let your truth have a safe space to land.


2. Let yourself have needs, and meet them without guilt

You are not a machine. You have human needs. You’re allowed to feel tired, overwhelmed, or hungry for more. One way we abandon ourselves is by pushing those needs down or expecting others to meet them without ever asking.

Instead, try this:

  • Pause once today and ask, “What do I need right now?”
    Then give yourself permission to meet that need. Whether it’s rest, water, space to cry, a walk, or saying no… honor it now. This is how you build inner trust.


3. Say no when it’s a no

Every time you say yes when you mean no, a little part of you feels dismissed. That might not seem like a big deal in each moment, but it adds up and compounds over time. Coming back to yourself means noticing when you override your gut… and choosing differently.

Try this today:

  • The next time something feels off, pause.

  • Instead of reacting out of habit, breathe and ask, “Is this a yes from my soul or from my people-pleasing?” Then choose the answer that feels peaceful, instead of pressured.

4. Speak to yourself like someone you love

We are so hard on ourselves. We beat ourselves up for not being healed enough, not being productive enough, not getting it all right. We have to remember though, healing doesn’t happen in shame. Healing happens in love.

So today, try softening the way you speak to yourself. If your inner voice is being harsh, imagine you’re talking to a child or a best friend instead. Would you say it that way to them? Probably not. Let your self-talk become a safe place, not a battlefield.


Remember, coming back to yourself isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about remembering who you’ve always been… underneath the pressure, the roles, and the noise. The more you choose truth over pretending… The more you listen to your needs instead of ignoring them… The more you show up for yourself like someone who matters… The more peace you’ll begin to feel… not because everything outside is perfect, but because you’re no longer abandoning the person inside.

If you’ve ever adopted a rescue dog or cat, you know the journey is not always linear. It takes time. It takes heart. And often, it takes more patience and healing than we expect.

In my work with PETs Energetics, I’ve supported many pets who carry invisible scars. These are energetic imprints from past experiences, losses or uncertainty. What’s beautiful is how these animals continue to open their hearts to us. Slowly. Cautiously. Bravely.

When we welcome a rescue into our home, we’re not just giving them shelter. We’re offering them the chance to feel safe again and to rediscover who they truly are. That process can take weeks or even months. During that time, our pets often reflect back to us the very energy we’re carrying.

If we are anxious, they may seem unsettled.
If we’re grieving, they may mirror that stillness or cling to us more.
If we’re calm, they soften and breathe more freely.

These mirrors are not punishments. They are invitations. They gently ask us to slow down, look inward and meet them, and ourselves, with more grace.

That’s the deeper truth about rescue pets. They are not broken. They are sensitive, attuned and deeply spiritual beings. When we choose to meet them with energy healing, patience and love, we both heal. Together.

As we greet the rejuvenating season of spring, I find myself reflecting on growth - not just the blossoming around us, but our personal journeys of expansion and transformation. Let's explore this together, through the lens of my own story and the wisdom of Ayurvedic elements.


Embracing Growth: The Plant Analogy:

Consider a thriving plant. When it outgrows its pot, we don't hesitate to transplant it into a larger one, giving it room to flourish. This simple act of changing containers is a powerful metaphor for personal and professional growth. Just like the plant, we too need space to expand, to reach our full potential.


My Journey of Expansion:

When I first embarked on my solo journey as a Reiki master teacher, the world of business was uncharted territory for me. I felt like a seedling in a small pot, yearning for space. Joining the HHW community was my way of stepping into a bigger container. This leap not only nurtured my growth as a Reiki practitioner but also as a solopreneur. It was a transformation that resonated deeply with the essence of Reiki - flowing with life's energy and embracing change.

 

The Ayurvedic Elements:

Ayurveda, often referred to as the sister science of Yoga, is an ancient holistic healing system from India. It emphasizes the balance of body, mind, and spirit through the understanding of the five elements – Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether. These elements represent different aspects of our existence and align with specific chakras, reminding us that growth is multidimensional. For instance, 'Earth' grounds us in stability, 'Water' nurtures our adaptability and emotional well-being, 'Fire' fuels our ambitions and transformative energy, 'Air' symbolizes movement and change, and 'Ether' connects us to the expansive, spiritual aspects of the universe.


Spring Awakening: A Time for Elemental Harmony:


This spring marks a special time in our collective journey - an opportunity to embrace the spirit of renewal and growth, aligning ourselves with the natural rhythm of the universe. This is more than just a learning experience; it's a transformative journey, allowing us to find our larger pot, where our roots can delve deeper and our branches can stretch higher. The journey towards achieving our dreams and aspirations begins not in an Instagram or TikTok reel,  but within the quiet chambers of our own hearts. The expression of our desires and ambitions is nurtured in the garden of our hearts. The quality of our relationship with ourselves is where we plant, cultivate and grow our desires and ambitions.


Releasing The Patterns Of Conditioning

Our relationship with ourselves is partially shaped by societal conditioning, familial influences, and the patterns we unwittingly allow to govern our thoughts and actions.

As we grow, explore, and take in teachings, we're bombarded with the beliefs, values, and norms of the society around us. We absorb these messages like sponges, internalizing judgments, expectations, and standards that may not truly align with our authentic selves. Family, too, imprints their mark on us, sometimes leaving imprints of their own limitations and self-judgment that cast shadows over our potential.

It's crucial to recognize that these influences are not the final verdict on our potential. As we master the ability to step back and evaluate what serves our genuine dreams and what inhibits them, we are able to make our own decisions. This self-awareness allows us to disentangle the threads of conditioning, making room for our own beliefs and desires to emerge.


Creating New Paths

Unraveling the patterns that have long held sway over us requires a conscious decision to create new paths. As we release the grip of old behaviors and thought patterns, we open the door to the liberating expanse of possibility. It's within this space that the seeds of our true potential can germinate and flourish.

Remember, every ripple in a pond begins with a single drop. Similarly, the shifts we wish to see in our external world start as gentle vibrations within. By nourishing our relationship with ourselves, we cultivate the roots of confidence, resilience, and authenticity that will guide us toward our goals.

Just as a garden flourishes when cared for with love and tenderness, so too do our lives when we practice self-compassion. The wellspring of change is replenished by the nourishing waters of unconditional love, kindness, compassion, and forgiveness – all extended not only to others but, crucially, to ourselves.

Our internal dialogue, the conversation we maintain with ourselves, serves as both the architect and sculptor of our reality. Replacing self-criticism with self-encouragement, doubt with belief, and fear with courage, we rewrite the script of our lives. This dialog shapes our thoughts, our actions, and the energy we emit into the world.

 


 

Healing Our Heart

To truly embrace the journey of self-relationship is to embark on a journey of healing. Just as a broken bone, when set right, grows back stronger, our wounds when acknowledged and healed, pave the way for resilience and self-love to flourish. The scars that mark our history are not signs of weakness but of strength – proof that we have endured, overcome and emerged wiser.

As the tapestry of our lives continues to unfold, we must remember that the most powerful catalyst for change begins with the love we extend to ourselves. Just as the warmth of the sun nourishes the earth, the warmth of self-love fuels our growth and transformation. 


Rewrite Your Narrative

You possess the incredible power to rewrite your narrative. With every step you take towards nurturing your relationship with yourself, you sow the seeds of your dreams and aspirations. The old patterns that once held you captive are no match for the resilient spirit within you.

Let the unconditional love, kindness, compassion, and forgiveness resonate within. Allow your internal dialogue to be a guiding light, illuminating your path toward a life rich with fulfillment and purpose. Embrace the process of healing, for it is through healing that you will discover the boundless capacity of your heart to love yourself unconditionally.


As you water the garden of your soul with nurturing care, watch as it transforms into a flourishing landscape – a testament to your journey of self-discovery, growth, and unwavering self-love.

As more and more women awaken and embrace their spiritual selves, there are many blocks. These can be self inflicted or societal expectation of what is “acceptable” and “normal”. Our human experience tells us that moving into a more spirit connected being might not be accepted by many. This essential part of our being has been long ignored in our modern lives. 


When you start to embrace or fully acknowledge the spiritual side of you, it is imperative to have a fully accepting support network. As we move into our more authentic and vulnerable selves, having a few trusted sounding board associates or friends is vital. We cannot expand into a different consciousness without this support.  


The world at large is still getting used to the idea of a spiritual awakening. For the most part it is women who are experiencing it. Once awakened to spirit, the growth and expansion is rapid and full of unknown and perhaps frightening experiences. A supportive knowledgeable and trusted network while you have unusual new experiences can make all the difference.

 

Finding a support network that fully embraces you, allowing you to be seen as your raw, authentic and vulnerable self allows us to expand more rapidly and without hindrances. As your spiritual experience integrates into your conscience, it is a much more fulfilling and pleasant journey with empowering and supportive people around you. 


The vocalization of all that is happening to and for you is an integral part of the journey. A welcoming and experienced group holding space for you during your expansion and hearing your vulnerable and authentic self speak your truth allows you to fully embody your spirit and live your truth.
